Thanks and Praise
(A new supplement to the Church of Ireland Hymnal)
Thanks & Praise began life as a question in early 2010 - are there enough hymns and songs in popular use to make compiling a collection feasible.
The answer came back very quickly as a resounding yes.
New hymns and songs are being written at an amazing rate, literally appearing daily. From the many thousands that appear occasionally a little gem emerges, and those gems deserve to be treasured and shared with a wide audience.
The book was compiled by a small committee of clergy and musicians from across the Church of Ireland, initially Bishop Harold Millar (Bishop of Down & Dromore, words editor), the Revd Dr Peter Thompson (Assistant Organist of Armagh Cathedral, rector of Castlecaulfield, music editor), Julie Bell (then director of music at Hillsborough Parish), Alison Cadden (Director of music at Seagoe Parish, Portadown) and the late Dr Donald Davison (director of music at St John's, Malone, Belfast).Ìý This group was later joined by Jacqueline Mullen, Derek Verso, David O'Shea and the Revd Alan Rufli (all from Dublin).
The group has a wide experience of leading worship and music in parish churches, cathedrals and collegiate chapels, and brought together this diversity of experience in a rich tapestry, represented by the eclectic collection that emerged.
Many established songs and hymns have found a welcome place, with several "old favourites" which had been overlooked in the past alongside some home-grown works by local authors and composers. The collection stretches from medieval plainsong to 21st century worship songs, with a little of everything in between.
Thanks & Praise has already been well received in all corners of the Church of Ireland and is quickly becoming a well-loved and treasured resource in worship.
Revd Dr Peter ThompsonÌý -Ìý Rector, St Michael's Castlecaulfield & St Patrick's Donaghmore, Succentor & Assistant Organist, St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh
The Osborne Singers (dir. Richard Campbell)
The Osborne singers are an occasional choir made up of singing colleagues and friends of its Director, Richard Campbell.
The choir typically meet once a month to sing Choral Evensong or other seasonally suitable works or services at St. Johns and aim to sing to a high standard in limited rehearsal time. The results are refreshingly spontaneous while reaching the high standard Ìýthat one would expect from such an elite group of singers.Ìý
Richard Campbell has been Director of Music at St Johns Malone since January 2014 and has a long established reputation as a highly accomplished organist & choir director. In addition to his duties at Malone and leading the Osborne Singers he is also Operations Director of NI’s leading digital printing company.
