Former Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer says that police officers must be held accountable after the conclusion of the Hillsborough inquests.

Kier Starmer, the Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras who was the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013, says 'it's appalling that police officers can retire and then not be subject to disciplinary proceedings'. Speaking after the Hillsborough inquest verdicts Mr Starmer said 'it has taken 27 years for the truth to come out and it cannot be right that anybody with culpability now escapes accountability. We've had truth, we've had justice, through the inquest verdict, there now needs to be accountability'.
