Script

Good morning.聽 Tomorrow is Pentecost Sunday, the day in the church鈥檚 calendar that marks the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the disciples.聽 This is surely one of the strangest and most exciting events in the New Testament.聽 A tornado whips into Jerusalem and settles inside one small house.聽 Fire breaks out, but only on the heads of a few people.聽 These men and women find themselves shouting against the roar of the wind, but their words come out jumbled, scrambled and reassembled into 鈥 well what exactly?聽 Not what you鈥檇 expect in a word from God.聽 More like a bad hand at Scrabble.聽

But in the linguistic chaos a message is heard loud and clear in a way that bypasses their heads and speaks straight to their hearts.聽 鈥淕od is here.鈥澛 Some are amazed, some are sceptical, but none of them will ever be the same again.

I find it heartening that the church wasn鈥檛 born in the sterile order of a committee room, but in the chaotic cacophony of an inexplicable event.聽聽 Chaos and mystery are prerequisites for meeting with God鈥檚 Holy Spirit.聽 How could it not be so?

Loving God, at the touch of your Spirit poor people feel like millionaires, sad people break out laughing, stony hearts melt and dead people open a quizzical eye.聽 Come to us again, as you came in wind and fire at Pentecost; rekindle the embers of your church and breath life into our barren culture, through your Holy Spirit.聽 Amen
