Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

I have just got back from Japan. The contrasts of this beautiful country were so stark for me. One moment you are in a high tech area where multi-storey shopping centres sell the latest electronic gadgets. The next minute you are in a garden with koi carp swimming elegantly in calming pools, bordered by rocks-balanced high.

One minute you are at a religious shrine from the era of the Samurais, the next you are at Anime centre with full grown adults dressed as their favourite characters.  Yet amidst these contrasts is this complete dedication to their traditional manners and customs, and it is extraordinary to witness.

They do indeed queue to get on to the train. Absolutely ordered lines, with no pushing, or jostling. Once on the train, no one speaks on their mobile phone. They browse their phones for sure, but there are no loud conversations on what someone wants for dinner.

If you are on a coach the baggage handler bows as it leaves. I was so taken aback the first time I witnessed it, but it happened every time I was on a coach. Indeed bowing is commonplace, and was explained to me as a mark of recognising the Divine qualities that exists within another person.

The search for consensus and conflict avoidance are the norm, even when ordering a meal together.   Ultimately they strive to avoid being "Meiwaku" - troublesome to the other.

With approximately 38 million people in greater Tokyo, it is a huge unwieldy population, yet it feels ordered, calm, and safe. It is so elegant a society that it was rather a shock to come back to the hustle and bustle of London - a city which is home, and which I love.

The Qur'an says, "We created you into distinct nations and tribes so that you can know one another not hate one another." I really felt that difference in Japan. We can get so trapped into thinking our way is the only way; that our norm is THE norm. Yet, when you witness a culture that is so different and distinct, you can acknowledge what an extraordinarily diverse planet that we live on, and celebrate it in all its glory.
