Chris’ Pause For Thought: Christopher Jamison

Chris’ Pause For Thought: Christopher Jamison

From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

Ìý

I spent last weekend in a castle. The castle is now owned by a Catholic trust that runs it as a spiritual adventure centre that offers life changing opportunities toÌýÌý school students. They can safely rock climb and mountain bike, shoot arrows and look at the stars. The special feature of this centre is that students are given time to reflect and pray, time to recognise the Spirit of God at work in the world and in their lives. I came away delighted that there are people and places that help children take risks in such a safe setting. If we don’t offer the young good risks they’ll seek out dodgy ones. I believe we need to help young people to take not only physical risks but also spiritual risks.

So what is a spiritual risk? It’s daring to pray and risk that God may have a mission in life for you; it’s giving away not only things you don’t need but also things you do need to somebody who needs them more; it’s standing up for justice no matter what. Jesus often took risks and his followers learnt that God is in the right kind of risks not in the wrong kind of security. Such spiritual risks need to be done safely as well, to guide youthful spiritual enthusiasm. So as families look towards the long summer holiday, perhaps you might consider offering your children adventures of body, mind and spirit. Scouting did it for me; at one camp, when I was about 15, we were abruptly woken in the middle of the night and simply told by our leaders to hike in the pitch dark to a certain map reference. My first scary adventure and I loved it. It’s hard for parents to get the balance right between being over-protective and being irresponsibly relaxed. Being a parent is a risky business. So why not go for good risks and stay safe.
