Chris鈥 Pause For Thought: Bishop of Bath & Wells
Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath & Wells:
I live just down the road from Glastonbury in the beautiful Cathedral City of Wells.聽 Recently I was walking my dog and stopped to speak with one of the buskers who is a very colourful character and well known in Wells.聽 Whatever the weather she has a big smile for everyone who passes and clearly loves the music she plays.聽 I asked her whether she had ever been to a Glastonbury festival and she said she went to the very first festival and that it was wonderful.聽 She remembers that throughout the day - and well into the night - people sat around in groups playing their guitars, and singing along together.聽 What amazes me about her is the incredible repertoire of songs she has, which she plays most of the time without any music.聽 She told me that she just loves singing and that all the songs and all the music are in her head.聽
What a great thing to have music in your head, in your heart and in your mouth and to get so much enjoyment from singing and playing.聽 Albert Einstein once said: 鈥淚f I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician.聽 I often think in music.聽 I live my daydreams in music.聽 I see my life in terms of music.鈥澛犅
And music is like that.聽 It helps us express what鈥檚 in our minds, what we see around us and perhaps even the things we long for.聽 Music gets into our souls and changes us.聽 Bono was right when he said: 鈥淢usic can change the world because it can change people.鈥澛 And that is what the world needs 鈥 people who will change the world for good.
As a bishop I meet some incredibly talented people and I meet some very lonely and sad people.聽 I meet people whose lives are full of joy and praise and people whose lives are full of bitterness and regrets.聽 The world is beautiful and wonderful, but there is so much that also needs changing.聽 There is just too much greed, violence, hatred and suffering.聽聽 So as Glastonbury get鈥檚 underway my hope is that as well as enjoying the music we let the music 鈥 and I would also want to say let God - change us, so that together we make the world a better place for everyone.
