Chris' Pause for Thought: Harvey Belovski
From Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski, rabbi of Golders Green Synagogue and CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy:
Ìý
I was fascinated to see that today 525 years ago, King Henry VIII was born.Ìý Chris, this reminded of the worst joke I’ve ever heard from a rabbi.Ìý He started his sermon with the line – ‘I won’t keep you long, as Henry VIII said to his wife!’
Ìý
Henry was a big man – I’ve seen his enormous armour at Hampton Court.Ìý He believed that he ruled as king by divine right and controlled the country by force of his personality.Ìý Henry seems to have been a conceited man, arrogant, difficult and convinced that he was right. But how to avoid the problem of hubris?
Ìý
A favourite Jewish teaching talks exactly to this issue.Ìý The author, Rabbi Simchah Bunim lived 200 years ago in Poland.Ìý He was a great Jewish scholar, but had also been a timber merchant and a pharmacist before he became a community leader, he spoke French and in his youth collected insects and even visited the theatre, rare for a rabbi of his times.Ìý He excites me because he combined authentic Jewish life and learning with a real understanding of the world around him and the challenges faced by ordinary people as well as leaders.Ìý My youngest son is named for him and I hope he follows the same path – although he’s currently only seven.
Ìý
Rabbi Simchah Bunim said that everyone must have two pockets, with a note in each.Ìý We should reach into one or the other, depending on the need. When we feel low or discouraged we should reach into the right pocket, and read the words: "The world was created for my sake."Ìý But when we are carried away with our own importance and power, we should reach into the left pocket, and read: "I am nothing but dust and ashes."
Ìý
We need to preserve a healthy balance – each of us has a vital role to play as though God created the world just for us; but we must never forget that we’re frail and often make mistakes.
Ìý
It’s a lovely idea, one I think about often and do my best to live by it.Ìý And just imagine how different the world might have been if Henry’s armour had included two pockets.
