Script

Good morning.
On this day in 1948 the National Health Service was created by an Act of Parliament. It was the first, and remains to this day the largest and the oldest,聽 nationally funded healthcare system in the world.

The NHS is one of the things I am most proud of in Britain. My family and I have been its beneficiaries so many times. I expect we all have cause to be grateful to its dedicated teams of staff鈥攄rawn from all over the world. We can be so very grateful for the vision of the politicians of post-war 1948, especially Aneurin Bevan who had the courage and foresight to create something that would care for the health and well-being of their people, and generations to come.

The legacy of these politicians is benefitting people to this day, In Islam our good deeds stop when we die except for three circumstances: the prayers of pious children, knowledge which others continue to learn from, and charity which others continue to benefit from.聽 Throughout the Muslim world there are endowments which are almost 1500 years old that still maintain health care provision, provide water, and even provide care for animals. Charity beyond our lifetime is a powerful force in Muslim narrative.

Our Lord, please care for those who work so diligently and selflessly for the NHS. Please reward those who had the foresight to create the organisation which has helped so many. And grant that we can leave a positive mark on this world that will benefit people now, and in the future. Let us strive to make a lasting legacy not out of vanity for our good name, but in humility and in hope of Your Blessing and Rewards. Ameen.
