More about the programme:

‘What do we want?  Leadership.  When do we want it?  Now.’ The cry has been heard from all quarters during this most tumultuous of periods in recent political history.

Britain has a new prime minister with Theresa May in Number Ten after a truncated battle for the Tory top job.   Labour hosts a civil war, while UKIP and the Greens will both this summer have to select someone to take the helm.   Meanwhile calls for strong, wise, inspirational leadership are heard in just about every area of life, from sport to religion.

But what are we looking for in our leaders?   How have our expectations changed over the years?  And in an age of instant communication, to what extent is the charisma of a leader as important as their character?

On All Things Considered this week, Roy Jenkins explores leadership, with the help of former First minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan, Bishop of Bangor Andy John, retired civil servant George Craig and award-winning commentator and columnist, Carolyn Hitt.
