Philip Harper is conductor of Cory, currently the No.1 band in the world. He's also a composer, arranger, publisher and until recently was editor of one of our leading band magazines. Busy man. He tells Frank Renton about the joys and pitfalls of being a conductor, he recalls his early days in what can be called the banding hinterland of Essex, and his journey from there to playing with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. He acknowledges the impact of working with Roy Newsome who was one of the most respected members of the banding community and he suggests a personal way forward for band writing in the future.
