Chris's Pause for Thought: Ann Easter

Chris's Pause for Thought: Ann Easter

From Canon Ann Easter, Chaplain to the Queen:

Today, August 3rd, is the day that the church remembers a woman called Lydia who was a business woman, she sold purple, that’s a dye that was cultivated with some difficulty from shellfish and, according to the Bible, Lydia met St Paul and converted to Christianity; but then she let Paul and some of his friends live in her home, both before and after they had been in prison – and that was a risky thing to do. She sounds like quite a girl!

Ìý

Lydia was probably a widow but clearly not poor, as purple was very much in demand, as much as anything because it didn’t fade like most colouring of that time; the Romans decided to use it for clothes for their Imperial court and, to this day, purple tends to signify something special – our bishops often wear purple cassocks, shirts and even socks!

Ìý

I love purple and wear it and use it a lot, for clothes and for decoration at home – our bathroom’s violetÌý - I fear it’s a throwback to my youth in the 60’s when there seemed to be a lot of purple around! – but it’s just one of the glorious colours that God gives us to enrich our lives. I think that some colours definitely cheer us up and make us feel better while others have a more calming effect.

Ìý

The Bible doesn’t feature many women so Lydia must have been outstanding; I hope that she felt pleased and proud to supply the colour which made people look special and so feel good about themselves. I think most of us know what it feels like to have at least one particular outfit that fits us well and suits us and so helps us to be the best version of our selves – and I reckon that’s all that God wants; not perfect people, we can’t all be saints like Lydia but we can all be sparkling, colourful sinners on a road to Heaven.
