In 2015, Carrie MacNeil was the latest in a long line of singers to win the prestigious Comunn G脿idhelach Gold Medal. A year on, Carrie reflects on her year and looks at the history of this iconic competition, one of the premier awards for Gaelic singing in Scotland.
The first gold medals were won in 1893 in Oban, and since then the competition has seen many different changes - in format, in numbers taking part, and in styles of singing. Carrie finds out more about the changes there have been over the years and also looks at the changes in Gaelic music generally. Does winning the gold medal still mean the same now as it did in the past? What did it mean for those who have won it over the years, and what opportunities are there now for the Mod Gold Medallists? Amongst those taking part are Kenna Campbell, Darren MacLean, Norman MacLean, Kirsteen MacDonald, Margaret MacLeod and Anne Lorne Gillies.
