Do we need more education about transgender issues?
Duration: 02:10
On this week's programme...
In a new interview, film director Ken Loach tells how his most recent film I, Daniel Blake shows "the human cost of a state's bureaucracy". Drawing on the real-life experiences of those living on benefits, the Palme d'Or winning filmmaker believes the Government is lacking compassion in its treatment of the most vulnerable in our society. With further cuts to benefits on the cards, the Prime Minister says we need to have a system that works for the taxpayer too. We debate - Are we a less compassionate society?
A reported increase in the number of legal disputes involving transgender children has been linked to greater public acceptance of gender reassignment. And this week, the 大象传媒 faced criticism for producing a drama for children with a transgender story. Critics of the programme say Just a Girl is "encouraging" children to change their gender. C大象传媒 says it's "a fictional drama about bullying, friendship, identity and a sense of belonging" which are universal themes very important to their audience. So, is it better to educate about transgender issues from an early age? Or is it a case of exposing children to too much, too soon? We discuss - Do we need more education about transgender issues?
A letter from the Muslim Women's Network UK has said the Government's ongoing Sharia council inquiries risk treating Muslim women like "political footballs". They claim religious conservatives deny that some women can be subject to discrimination in a Sharia court, while activists opposed to the councils "conflate misogyny and patriarchy with extremism", which can lead to Islamophobia. But do Sharia councils have a place in modern Britain? Or is religious law outdated? We ask - Are Sharia councils compatible with UK law?
Also on the programme, actress Bhavna Limbachia talks to Tommy Sandhu about playing contrasting roles in two of the biggest shows on television; Alia the mischievous daughter in Citizen Khan, and femme fatale Rana in Coronation Street.
