Playwright Kaite O’Reilly works extensively within disability arts and culture and Oberon books have just published a collection of her plays ‘Atypical Plays for Atypical Actors’, a unique collection which asks the question ‘What is Normal?’. She explains why she is tired of using metaphors for the body and compares the early days of the disability arts movement with the early days of punk. Kaite has won various awards for her work, including the 2009 International Susan Smith Blackburn Award for ‘The Almond and the Seahorse’. Kaite is reunited with the actor Celyn Jones who was part of the original cast for this production and performs passages where his character has in Kaite’s words ‘become unmoored by time’.

Trevor Cox is Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford and the author of ‘Sonic Wonderland: A Scientific Odyssey of Sound’ (Vintage). He joins The Verb to launch our new series on words for sounds, asking fellow guests and listeners to consider how you would categorise sounds like: ‘Splash, swoosh, ding, trickle, beep and buzz’.

Caoilinn Hughes’ debut poetry collection ‘Gathering Evidence’ (Carcanet) won the Irish Times Shine/Strong award and the Patrick Kavanagh award. She is the latest poet to present new work as part of our ‘Three Score and Ten’ series, celebrating both the past and the future of poetry on Radio 3. Caoilinn performs ‘We Must Use All the Parts of the Bison’, a title which is inspired by her time in America, Yeats and ‘post fact’ politics.

C Duncan is a Scottish composer and musician. His debut album ‘Architect’ was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Chris performs from his new album ‘The Midnight Sun’ which he says is influenced by American television show ‘The Twilight Zone’; he feels they both have an ‘icy’ quality. Chris discusses lyrics that are admittedly abstract, but still mean something to him.
