"Great charity [love] and a massive hope in the future" was how Elgar described the message of his First Symphony, and when it was premiered in Manchester in 1908, the audience simply rose to its feet and cheered. This season, the 大象传媒 SSO plays all three of Elgar's symphonies, beginning with a performance from Thomas Dausgaard of the work that heralded a new dawn for British music and launched one of Elgar's most unforgettable melodies along the way. To match it, Steven Isserlis brings all his peerless insight to a cello concerto that ends with one of the loveliest sunsets in all music; Dvo艡谩k's impassioned, nostalgia-drenched hymn to new worlds and absent friends.

After tonight's concert there's a chance to hear the fruits of the latest round of Adopt-a-Composer projects, which pair a composer with an amateur performing group in order to write and perform a new piece of music.
