I was at Taunton鈥檚 cricket ground on Wednesday, at a do for Somerset County Council, and had a flashback, not in a good way, to my dread of being made to play cricket at school. This was partly because as the nerdy gay kid I was always the last to be picked (for any sport), but more specifically 鈥� and I hate to pander to a caricature here 鈥� I could neither throw nor catch. When I tried to bowl, I looked like an exercise in random ballistics, spewing forth balls like Guinevere, the lotto machine. The last time I tried to catch, I required the attention of a maxillo-facial surgeon.

This is awkward, for my parish of Finedon is famous for cricket. We have a magnificent cricket club, bounded by elms and our church spire, and there I have watched everyone from New Zealand鈥檚 First XI, to those identical twins off Harry Potter, step onto the field.

As Vicar, alas, I got off to a poor start. At my first match I made my way round the boundary in my cassock ,with four sausage dogs off the lead, and found a nice spot to watch the game in front of a big white fence on wheels. Great view of the bowling. EVERYBODY waved.
听
But I persevered, and in the past seven years I have married our cricketers, buried our cricketers, baptised the children of our cricketers, comforted our cricketers, counselled our cricketers, blessed our cricketers, got drunk with our cricketers, cried havoc with our cricketers, cried with our cricketers, celebrated my surprise fiftieth birthday party at the cricket club 鈥� theme: 80s Disco Apocalypse - and played my last gig with our cricketers, as featured guest artiste with club band The Cupping Melons.

LGBT people who want to get involved in the Church of England may also feel like the nerdy kid not being picked for sport; but remember the CofE is also THIS: a place where gay Vicars and their gay Vicar partners, who can鈥檛 throw for toffee, and trip over the wicket, are welcomed, affirmed, bought pints, and cheerfully forgiven for the only real sin of walking in front of the big white fence at throwing time.
