This week we have an extended interview with the prolific American novelist Paul Auster. Most famous for his 'New York Trilogy', Auster has published over twenty novels so far, most recently '4-3-2-1' (Faber). The books tells the story of Archie Ferguson over four different narratives, and is the latest of his novels to examine themes of identity and personal meaning.

Ian's conversation with Paul covers his whole life in writing, and includes his poetry, translations, and letters. Paul discusses his epistolary friendship with J.M Coetzee, the importance of baseball to the American psyche, the moment that made him a novelist, and we hear invaluable writing advice for those struggling with their work.

The first of his New York Trilogy novels, 'City of Glass' has recently been adapted into an innovative stage show by 59 Productions; a theatre company working at the cutting edge of technology - it can be seen at HOME in Manchester until 18th March before transferring to the Lyric Hammersmith.
