Fight to the Finish - The Story of Marieke Vervoort
Eleanor Oldroyd meets Paralympic medallist Marieke Vervoort, who has a degenerative spinal disease.
Marieke Vervoort won two medals at the Paralympics in Rio last summer. Now, back home in Belgium, she is considering when to end her life.
Marieke has a degenerative spinal disease, and signed papers for euthanasia, which is legal in Belgium, in 2008. Since then, she has become Olympic and World Champion. Having retired from wheelchair racing after Rio, she now says she wants to enjoy every little moment that she can, before she takes the ultimate decision when her life quality deteriorates.
Eleanor Oldroyd has been to see Marieke in her home town of Diest to speak to her, her friends and family, and find out how and why she made this decision, and why she says it's helped prolong her life.
