Frantic legal battles are taking place in the state of Arkansas over the execution of eight prisoners.听The state wanted to execute the prisoners all in the space of ten days, starting today, because one of the lethal injection drugs they need to use expires soon. But a judge has halted the executions, citing a case where one prisoner took more than forty minutes to die, and ruling the drug would cause severe pain ahead of death. President Trump's National Security Advisor, H R McMaster, has said that an international consensus emerging against what he called North Korea's threatening behaviour now includes China. General McMaster said the US was working with its allies and with the Chinese leadership, to develop a range of options.
