Breaking Free - Martin Luther's Revolution: The Genevan Psalter

Sara Mohr-Pietsch delves into the world of John Calvin's Genevan Psalter and explores its impact upon composers since the Reformation.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch journeys into the reforming world of John Calvin. As part of 大象传媒 Radio 3's 'Breaking Free - Martin Luther's Revolution' season, The Choir focuses on the Genevan Psalter and its impact upon choral worship including the development of the Anglo-Psalter. With experts Professor Jane Dawson and Dr Timothy Duguid joining Sara, they look at how Calvin wanted all the congregation to be involved in worshiping God through music, and how the Genevan melodies became so popular they had a life of their own outside the walls of the church. Composers such as Vaughan Williams, Liszt, Schumann, Kodaly and JS Bach have all adapted melodies from the Genevan Psalter, creating new choral and instrumental works. Some of the Genevan psalm melodies even ended up in the Sultan's seraglio, courtesy of the composer Ali Ufki.
