Classic Album: The Housemartins' London 0 Hull 4

Steve Lamacq revisits a Classic Album of the Day with The Housemartins' Paul Heaton, plus he brings along his diary to help remember the makings of the band's 1986 debut LP.

The Housemartins 1986 album, London 0 Hull 4, is 6 Music's Classic Album of the Day.

In an interview first broadcast in 2014, Paul Heaton brings along his diary to help remember the makings of a debut LP, which remains relevant over thirty years later.

Paul remembers busking with Stan Cullimore in Hull and playing at the bottom of the bill in the city's smaller venues, before John Peel played their demo, and they signed a record contract live on stage at The Adelphi.

Inspired by artists as diverse as Buzzcocks, Billy Bragg and Al Green, the Miners' Strikes, in particular, motivated Paul to write angrier songs. And when they headed to the studio in January 1986, despite not being down with studio lingo, they turned around a classic album in just six days.
