Sheep worrying, Creel fishermen, Wheat field runs and crop protection
Dog attacks on sheep, creel fishermen demand a trawler ban, a wheat field fad on social media and biorational pesticides.
Dog attacks on sheep are now so frequent that the National Sheep Association is calling for more action from police to get justice for farmers. The Association's Sheep Worrying Survey for 2017 has just been published and it suggests that 40 per cent of sheep attacks by dogs were carried out by strays or unaccompanied pets.
Creel fishermen in West Scotland are demanding a big change in the way fisheries are managed. They want the Scottish government to ban trawlers from inshore waters and they say the move would create hundreds of new jobs.
It seems that running through wheat fields isn't just restricted to the childhood antics of the Prime Minister. Now Facebook is buzzing with people boasting about taking part in a mass wheat field run. Understandably some farmers are unhappy but a social media expert says the whole campaign should be taken with a very large pinch of salt.
Biorational pesticides are being used by farmers to cut the amount of chemicals they spread and lessen the effect on the wider environment. But Swansea University scientists believe biorationals, which target the pest alone, could be made more effective by developing new ways to use them.
