Pause For Thought
Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison.
On Monday I went to visit my old violin teacher, Amanda. I learnt with her from the age of 9 to 17, so on my way there I felt like I was driving backwards in time. Those half hours accumulated over the years, and gave me what I think is a real gift – to be able to play an instrument. In many ways I wasn’t really a great student. I didn’t practice so well and hated reading music. But Amanda was a great teacher. When I would voluntarily compose my own songs, no matter how rinky-dink they were, she would get her violin out and play them too, and for all the early years that my playing screeched like a dying cat, she always helped me to believe that one day, far in the future, it would actually sound good!
I didn’t continue studying music after we parted ways, but when I graduated from uni, an opportunity dropped into my lap to tour the world with a mantra music group. Those two months became several years – and a destiny unfolded with my violin at my side. I never knew how much it would mean to me – playing an instrument has carried me through difficult times, given me a voice when I had no confidence, and a way to serve others and hopefully bring them joy.
When I saw Amanda this week I gave her something I’d recorded a few years ago, with her name in the credits. I wanted her to know how much her contribution in my life had blossomed, and how grateful I was.
It was like no time had passed at all, and as we sat together and caught up on more than a decade of life, I appreciated even more, the connection between student and teacher, and how important it feels to let people know how much they have made a difference to my life. Â
So thank you, all you teachers, slaving away in hot classrooms today!
Life is a bit slower when you are stopping to turn around and say thank you all the time. J but from my experience giving gratitude makes me a happier person and –I think, having a reason to slow down isn’t such a bad thing either?
