Good morning,
Muslims all around the world will be ending the month of Ramadan either today or tomorrow depending on the sighting of the new moon. We will then celebrate `Id al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of our monthly fast during which we have been going from dawn to sunset without eating any food or having anything to drink.聽 This Wednesday, on solstice day, we fasted for the the longest amount of time possible,聽 something that will not be repeated for another 30 years or so.
Fasting is nothing new nor is it unique to Muslims. The Quran explains that fasting has been made obligatory on Muslims,聽 so that we may become God conscious and God fearing.
For Muslims, fasting is not just about abstaining from food and drink, it鈥檚 a lot more than that. There is the fasting of the tongue whereby no hurtful, vulgar or vile word is uttered to a fellow human being, avoiding backbiting, gossiping and lying. There is the fasting of the eyes, meaning not to look at forbidden things that might tempt us.. There is the fasting of the ears, meaning that we shouldn鈥檛 listen to evil and wasteful talk. In short every limb must be used only in a way allowed by God and in His obedience. Only then can a Muslim truly benefit from what Ramadan brings.
Muhammad said, 鈥淲hoever does not give up lying and evil actions, God is not in need of his giving up food and drink.鈥
Dear God, let every word we utter be true, pleasant and kind, and let every action of ours be peaceful, amin
