Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

Seven new rabbis were ordained by Leo Baeck College last Sunday afternoon, in a wonderful celebratory service. All were exceptional in their own ways, but one, Haim Casas, has made history, as the first Spanish progressive rabbi ever ordained- being progressive means not believing that the Torah, the five books of Moses, were literally handed down by God to Moses, and not being orthodox. Haim鈥檚 ordination is remarkable because it is only recently that Spain has been home to any significant number of Jews. They were thrown out by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492, or forced to convert to Christianity. They faced the Inquisition and constant suspicion if they stayed, so many went to the Netherlands, to the UK eventually, and to Latin America. But now Spanish people are discovering, five centuries on, that some of them have Jewish roots, whilst other Jews are moving to Spain from elsewhere. So Spain has small but growing Jewish communities, and the accepted wisdom that Jewish life in Spain had ended has been overturned.

So Haim鈥檚 ordination was very significant. It was a sign of hope and a statement of belief in a Jewish future in Spain. And it turned the experts鈥 opinions on their heads. I love it when that happens, when totally unexpected turns in history give us hope. I love the fact that many Muslim communities are opening up their iftars, their fast breaking dinners during Ramadan, to non-Muslims, and I love the fact that Jews, Christians and others host iftars for their Muslim brothers and sisters- none of this even dreamt of 20 years ago. I love the fact that Germany, where there were no Jews after the Holocaust, is now home to a rapidly growing Jewish community. I love the fact that in London and beyond, churches and synagogues are working together on winter night shelters and food distribution projects, something not even thought of 20 years ago. And I love the fact we can now celebrate this diversity, and this coming together. 鈥淏ehold, how good it is and how pleasant, for brothers and sisters to sit together in harmony鈥, wrote the Psalmist. But how much more pleasant and wonderful it is when the fact that we鈥檙e sitting together, and working together, is new, unexpected, and a real sign of hope.听
