Gifted kids, Prostitution, Vicky Jones, Compton Verney
How do you raise a gifted child? Impact of prostitution-specific criminal records on women; Writer Vicky Jones on her new play Touch; Compton Verney's women's library.
Gifted tells the story of Frank Adler, a single man raising his orphaned 7-year old niece, Mary, who is extraordinarily gifted. How can Frank best look after maths genius Mary? In real life, most parents are proud of their children's talents, but how can you tell if your child is extraordinary? Jenni talks to Julie Taplin, Deputy Chief Executive of Potential Plus UK and Tina, a mother of a nine year old boy who is a member of Mensa and this year took his Maths GCSE.
Should women involved or formerly involved in prostitution have their criminal records sealed or wiped when they apply for work? The charity nia has looked at the impact of prostitution-specific criminal records and is calling for an end to criminalising women. Jenni is joined by Heather Harvey, nia's head of research and development and by Fiona, a prostitution survivor.
Compton Verney is a grand country house in Warwickshire, built in 1714 and surrounded by 120 acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown, and most famous for its library. The original owner, Georgiana Verney was a champion of women's writing. Now her library has been re-stocked by local school children, a prison reading group and the actor Emma Watson. Henrietta Harrison spoke to Dr Sophie Ratcliffe, a tutor at Oxford University's Lady Margaret Hall who helped to recreate the library.
Writer and director, Vicky Jones joins Jenni to talk about 'Touch' her new play from DryWrite - the theatre company co-founded by Jones and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. 'Touch' explores the reality of dating and reflects a recent shift in the way women write about female sexuality and identity.
