I remember seeing the first series of Doctor Who way back in the 60s. I鈥檓 by no means a fan but I just love bumping into it from time to time when I switch on the television. It brings back such lovely memories. So the fuss and kerfuffle that followed the news that the title role is soon to be occupied by a woman has got me thinking. It seems obvious to me that a character who can cross from one continent to another, from one period of time to another, should have no difficulty crossing from one gender to another. Goes with the turf, that鈥檚 my feeling.

Much of the debate has focused on the question of identity 鈥� a big question these days. Who are we? How do we define and respect differences between people? How do we live with each other in a genuinely diverse society? A friend of mine wrote a book about race relations which he called 鈥淣obodies into Somebodies.鈥澛� He was concerned to find a way to bring members of black and Asian groups out of the shadows where our class system and institutional racism had driven them and into the limelight where they could play their full part in our daily affairs. Like going into a Tardis in fact, leaving one world with its prejudices and constrictions and finding yourself in another where all these have been removed. The Bible takes us down a similar path 鈥� God chooses those who are weak to confound the strong and people thought foolish to shame the wise. It all revolves around the possibility of replacing our stereotypical ways of imagining each other with something altogether more nuanced and open to difference.

The gender of the person playing Dr Who seems a small matter compared with all these grand questions. And yet it centres on the very same issues. A woman following twelve men seems to be a problem for some people. Dr Why? They ask. As for me, it鈥檚 a matter of Dr Why-not? Go for it Jodie Whittaker.
