Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

Earlier this week I was on the Isle of Whithorn in Scotland, walking the dog along the cliffs on a bracingly beautiful day, when I met a man coming the other way. Sunburnt, with a wilted bleached mohican, and carrying a rucksack that looked bigger than him, I thought, 鈥榶ou鈥檙e not local鈥. He wasn鈥檛, and he was carrying that rucksack, packed with all his worldly goods, on a 7,000 mile tour round the coastline of Britain. His name is Sam Doyle, and he鈥檚 former military, a veteran of Afghanistan where he experienced a horror so intense he came home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.聽聽Like many service personnel wounded in that way, once home his life began fall apart; but on the very brink of losing everything he stopped and resolved to go another way. A hard and austere way, sleeping out, foraging and fishing for food, on a two year trek to raise awareness and funding for people like him, veterans with PTSD.

What he鈥檚 discovered so far is, first, the extraordinary generosity and compassion of people he's met on his way, including those at the pub where I was staying, who threw him a party which ended in the least sober version of I Would Walk Five Hundred Miles in the history of Scottish emigration. Second, that PTSD is a dark and relentless enemy, and in the silence of the night, horrors can come again. Maybe look out for him if you live in one of the 280 seaside towns he will pass through on his way.

As a priest I have talked to too many veterans of conflict to buy into Hollywood heroics; the chest beating melodramas of guys in combats who've never seen combat, and for whom the expression of insecurity or vulnerability would be as catastrophically shaming as being caught out in a sarong.聽聽

In my experience courage is not the absence of fear; it is not being defeated by fear, and finding within yourself the strength and detachment to haul yourself out of a hole and into the light. The Christian story is full of that transition, from darkness to light. I don't know if Sam would describe himself as a believer or not - it makes no difference to my prayer that he be blessed in his endeavour. Abundant blessings on you, Sam Doyle, as you journey on.聽
