Prayer for the Day Script - Rev Dr Lesley Carroll
Good Morning.
45 years ago today the residents of Claudy a village in the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains, awoke and went about their business. By the end of the day nine people were dead including an eight year old girl, and two teenage boys; murdered by three car bombs planted by the Irish Republican Army.
42 years ago today one of Ireland鈥檚 best-known Showbands was travelling home to Dublin through County Down. Their minibus was stopped by what appeared to be a British Army checkpoint but it was a trap. Three members of the band were murdered and two others injured by Ulster Volunteer Force gunmen.
These are terrible events in the history of these Islands. For the families of the dead and injured there are 12 murdered loved ones to be remembered today.
Their names are among the names of so many others who have lost their lives in acts of terror and violence. The truth of what happened still matters to those who remember. Many feel no one cares because they cannot get answers.
So today we pause to remember, to pray with and for those who will remember loved ones murdered in acts of terror. Perhaps those who have answers will remember the dead too - adults and children who still had so much living to do.聽
Lord we pray for those who mourn and remember, whose loved ones were lost long ago or more recently. 聽May the God of comfort, who sees us 聽whether we are awake or asleep provide those who mourn with company and blessing even on this day. Amen
