The Morals of Meat; Harold Good; The Belfast Jacobin
Is vegetarianism, perhaps even veganism, the only way to be a moral person in the 21st century, or is everything on Earth there to serve mankind?
Given that food production techniques have advanced so much over the past 50 years can it now be said that there is no moral justification for eating meat or indeed dairy products? A recent advertisement by the campaign group Go Vegan World described humane milk production as a myth - despite complaints to the Advertising Authority it was allowed to continue. The biologist Richard Dawkins has also got into the morals of food production argument. He recently compared the transportation of cattle to the railway wagons taking Nazi victims to Auschwitz.
So here's the big question: Would Jesus be a vegan if he were on earth today? Presenter Audrey Carville firstly hears from Derbyshire farmer and vegan Jay Wilde who donated his entire cattle herd to an animal sanctuary because he felt he could no longer ethically justify having a dairy farm. Jay's interview is followed by a discussion embracing just some of the range of arguments on this very topical issue.
