Good morning.
During this week I’m talking about transitions.Ìý Today is the sixteenth anniversary of 9/11 and the memory still shocks us.Ìý On that day I was with some elderly members of my congregation.Ìý
We were as they say ‘talking about nothing’ and the TV was talking to itself in the corner.Ìý But suddenly one’s half an eye on the TV became much more than that as the tragedy began to unfold.
It was one of those moments when you knew that you were watching events which would usher in a new chapter in history.Ìý People were dying.Ìý Nobody knew what was happening and what was going to happen next.Ìý And the world has become a more dangerous place since then.
As I talk about transitions this week, 9/11 reminds us of the moments when history turns.Ìý It also reminds us to be thoughtful and prayerful for those who live with the consequences of that dreadful day. ÌýÌý
Ìý
The tragedies continue to unfold - Manchester, Nice, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, London and all the others. ÌýClearly there is no easy answer. ÌýIntelligence and vigilance are part of it.Ìý But so also is the constant work to build up a society of open and generous communication – inclusive, diverse and compassionate.
Ìý
Father
Be with all those who bear the scars of suffering
Bring peace to our unpredictable and dangerous world.
Enter into the hearts of those who plan to harm us
And give them healing
Amen.
