Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

It鈥檚 a while since I had the honour of being on Pause for Thought. There鈥檚 a good reason for that. Five weeks ago I changed from my beloved Enniskillen to take up a new post in a monastery in Crossgar, Co Down. It鈥檚 less than 100 miles away, but after 20 years ministering in Enniskillen it鈥檚 like moving to a different planet.

I was born in Enniskillen; I love the people there. They were kind to me at a time in my life when I almost fell apart. And they always forgave my many faults generously.

If I鈥檓 honest though, the trauma of change has taught me some valuable lessons. I discovered lots of new things about myself. For example, the older I get the more set in my ways I become. As the saying goes, the only one in favour of change is a baby with a soiled nappy.

And here鈥檚 good advice -if you have to leave the place you love, it鈥檚 best to move as fast as you can. Furthermore it鈥檚 necessary to ruthlessly discard as many possessions as possible. Carry memories instead of things.

I just about accept now that life itself is a journey not a destination; it鈥檚 a series of many goodbyes and just as many hellos. We have to treasure both.

Being grateful for past blessings teaches us to be open to new people and new challenges.

Every time I move on, I leave something of myself behind but聽 the bottom line is I have to grow where I鈥檓 planted.

Goodbyes are tough on those left behind too, so I must be careful not to become a ghost from the past constantly stirring up painful memories.

Most important of all is the realisation that every leaving is a preparation for the inevitable final departure from this earth.

Loving, living and leaving - that鈥檚 life.聽 If I avoid the pain of leaving, I will never really experience the joys of living and loving.

I鈥檝e learned that love is stronger than fear. Life is stronger than death. And hope is stronger than heart-break.聽
