Pause for Thought: "Daring to look inside ourselves鈥攂eyond the mere physical鈥攃an be hard."

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Today is International Day of Radiology, a day which coincides with the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays, and which celebrates modern medicine鈥檚 ability to see within us.聽X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasounds鈥 All medical marvels.

Many of us - indeed probably most of us - have either had one of these procedures or know someone who has. Seeing the unseen which lies within us is something which today we take for granted, but which would have been considered magic or miraculous not that long ago. Our physical selves are made known to us more and more as medicine advances.聽Yet is there still more to be seen; to be known?

I have witnessed an ultrasound of my heart pumping away, its four chambers working perfectly. Yet I still talk of my heart being broken by the tests and trials of life.聽
When our heart stops pumping we are no more. Yet the Qur鈥檃n talks of bringing to God a 鈥渟ound heart鈥濃攁 metaphor for goodness that can鈥檛 be measured by a scan, but yet we experience goodness in ourselves and others.聽

We talk of broken hearts, sound hearts, good hearts. All things which can鈥檛 be captured by a machine, but which we know to exist.聽

Daring to look inside ourselves鈥攂eyond the mere physical鈥攃an be hard. It requires deep, and often uncomfortable introspection. For me, faith asks me to call myself to account; to question myself, my intentions, to examine why I did what I did, why I feel what I feel. And despite how painful and difficult such internal searching can be, to do it anyway, and to do it truthfully and joyfully.聽

Hundreds of years ago humans could not imagine seeing inside ourselves physically. Perhaps in hundreds of years hence we will be able to see the unseen emotions and feelings that make us more than flesh, to see the uniqueness that makes us all who we each are.
Until then, we have to rely on our own humanity, be courageous enough to search ourselves, and to scan our own hearts.聽

The Muslim poet Rumi declared, 鈥淥pen the window in the centre of your chest, and let the spirits fly in and out.鈥 It鈥檚 a poem. It isn鈥檛 literal. Yet somehow a part of me deep within understands what he means.
