The Environment Secretary. Michael Gove. this week announced that the UK government will no longer support the use of neonicotinoid pesticides - in fact it will work to to extend the existing temporary EU ban, which was imposed after they were linked with declining bee populations. Charlotte Smith asks what an extended ban would mean for farmers. Meanwhile the member states of the EU have once again failed to reach agreement on whether to re-license glyphosate, the world's most widely used weedkiller. Its existing licence expires in December. Charlotte talks to both the Crop Protection Association, which represents the chemical companies, and the Soil Association, which campaigns for more organic farming, about what the future may hold, as both groups seek alternatives to the existing chemicals.
