Pause for Thought
From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:
A man who compiled many best-selling dictionaries, Dr Wilfrid Funk, was asked to list what he considered to be the most expressive words in the English language.
He listed the cruellest word as 鈥渞evenge鈥; the most beautiful is 鈥渓ove鈥; the most tender is 鈥渕other鈥. He added that the most hopeful is 鈥渃onfidence鈥.
Mark Twain put a humorous twist on it when he suggested that all you need to succeed in life is ignorance and confidence.
In sport confidence is infectious, while a lack of confidence will destroy you just as quickly. If you can get your head right your body will follow. Ability is your greatest gift but confidence is your best friend.
When I begin something new I鈥檓 usually very fearful. At first I have to convince myself that I think I can do it. I keep persuading myself that I think I can do it until I reach the point where I say over and over again, I know I can do it. Only then am I ready to do it.
Something really magical happens when we move from 鈥渉oping鈥 to 鈥渒nowing鈥. Wasn鈥檛 that what President Obama did with his 鈥淵es we can鈥 catchphrase. Believe you can and you will; believe you can鈥檛 and you won鈥檛.
No one can make you feel inferior unless you allow them to; you are the only one who can use your abilities.
Confidence is not hoping 鈥榯hey will like me鈥; Rather it is realising that I will be fine whether they like me or not. A flower doesn鈥檛 try to compete with the flower next to it - it just blooms.
The run up to Christmas is an opportune time to build up confidence in my own goodness and in God鈥檚 care for all people. The parties and the shopping help me see the marvellous generosity of friends and to accept their goodness for what it is - genuine love.
At Christmas I remind myself that if God was happy to become a vulnerable human being, then I too should be happy being one.
