Nation's Favourites: Matthew Bourne

Jo meets with choreographer Matthew Bourne to talk through his career in dance. Jo explores Matthew's world from waiting by stage doors to meet his idols to reworking Swan Lake.

In this series of interviews Jo talks to some of the nation's biggest talents across British culture, including film and television; Joanna Lumley and literature with Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

Tonight she is joined by choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne. Matthew was born and raised in London where when he was a teenager he would hang around the West End's Stage Doors hoping to meet his idols such as Charlie Chaplin. In his teens he would direct and lead his own amateur dance companies despite never taking lessons himself until his early twenties.

Having graduated from Laban in 1985 he would continue his career as a professional dancer until 1999.

Since 1987 he's been working as a professional choreographer and director and is the only British director to have won Tony Awards for 'Best Direction of a Musical' and 'Best Choreography'.

He is most famous for his production of Swan Lake which first opened in 1995 and is the longest running ballet on Broadway and the West End.
