The unique wildlife and landscape of the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, are famous. However, according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, over 70 Galapagos species are now threatened with extinction.

The Galapagos Conservation Trust was set up in 1995 and work solely towards the conservation of the Galapagos Islands and the unique wildlife found there. By supporting scientific and conservation projects and raising awareness in both the UK and in Ecuador, we aim to ensure that the Islands will be around for future generations to enjoy.

Of the wildlife lost worldwide, 80% has occurred on islands. Despite looking pristine, Floreana鈥檚 wildlife and habitats have been devastated by invasive species including rats, with 55 native species now threatened with extinction, and a further 12 that are no longer found on the main island of Floreana, including the Floreana mockingbird.

The endangered Floreana mockingbird is extinct from its original home island in Galapagos, Floreana, due to habitat loss and invasive species. It now only exists on two tiny islets nearby and its best chance of survival is to be reintroduced back to Floreana.

Along with our partners, we are working on an ambitious project to restore Floreana. Floreana will be the world鈥檚 first large inhabited island to have its ecosystem completely restored and to have species, including the Floreana mockingbird, reintroduced to it. Not only will this project save endangered species, it will act as a template for other islands globally.
