Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

We had a great day out recently to one of my favourite places, the aquarium. A birthday treat for yours truly, 21 again Chris, I loved every minute. And apart from a slight miscalculation of pocket money in the gift shop our visit was rather uneventful, not so our previous excursion. On that occasion things started to go decidedly fishy just after we’d bought our tickets, we were just peering into the first tank when the fire alarm sounded. We all made our way quickly but calmly to the exits. I reassured our Arthur that everything would be fine and we would be certain be allowed back in in just a few minutes. That all changed when we got outside, we turned to see whisps of smoke. Thankfully everyone was safely evacuated but then our thoughts turned to the safety of the aquarium’s most important residents and in particular the very animals we’d come to see, the penguins, dearly hoping our feathered flightless friends were ok. We needn’t have worried because from our muster point in the car park we saw a wonderful sight, the penguins, being lined up at their own evacuation point on a terrace and one of the aquarium staff, God bless her, with a clip board, lining them all up so she could do a head count. The penguins were fine, all present and correct and so was the rest of the aquarium, a very minor electrical fault soon under control by the fire crews.

Ìý

Jesus tells a story in the bible about feathered friends and counting, not penguins, but sparrows, saying to a gathered crowd that God knows each bird of the air and telling those who listened, ‘Even the hairs on your head are numbered and known by God.’ Emphasising that no one is insignificant and every person matters, no one is left behind, and when we might be tempted to think no one cares, holding on to the idea that no one is forgotten by God, we are all very important people to him.

Ìý

The image of those penguins on parade that day at the aquarium will live with me for a long time, counted and accounted for, all present and correct, the aquarium keeper making sure they were all safe, the VIPs, the very important penguins.
