Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

A rabbi had a terrible voice, but he thought he was a great singer and no-one had the guts to tell him the truth.听 Once, the rabbi found himself sitting next to the bride鈥檚 father at a wedding.听 He was asked to lead grace after meals, but to the horror of the guests, once he had finished the brief prayer, he went straight into a medley of his favourite songs.听 After 20 minutes, the toastmaster tried, but failed, to snatch the mic.听 In despair, he grabbed a heavy candlestick and lunged at the singing rabbi, but he ducked, and the toastmaster clobbered the bride鈥檚 father, who slumped on the table.听 Mortified, the toastmaster rushed to apologise.听 Bleeding from a gash on his head, the injured man said, 鈥榟it me again, I can still hear the rabbi singing鈥.

Singing plays an important role in our home, especially on Shabbat 鈥 the weekly Sabbath.听 Shabbat is an oasis of calm, a time to reflect on the purpose of life and renew our relationship with God, the creator.听 We share time with family and friends, rejoicing in 25 wonderful hours with no TV, phones or pressure from work commitments.听 Delicious meals are enjoyed at a leisurely pace and one of the ways in which we celebrate the unique Shabbat atmosphere is by singing beautiful melodies between courses.听 To the uninitiated, the idea of singing together over a glass of wine or a piece of chicken might seem strange, but music draws us together in unusual ways.听 Some of the wordless tunes we sing 鈥 which anyone can pick up 鈥 have shaped my Jewish identity and created unexpected bonds with others.

We once hosted a non-Jewish family for Shabbat dinner.听 At first, the teenage boys were not impressed with the idea of singing and kept their arms firmly folded.听 But they gradually warmed up and got drawn in.听 Their dad told me that the next morning his boys were singing one of my tunes over their cornflakes.

King David is known as the 鈥榥e鈥檌m zemirot Yisrael鈥: the sweet singer of the Jewish people.听 One of the most complex biblical figures, he bared his soul through beautiful psalms and powerful music.听 Every Shabbat, we take up King David鈥檚 mantle and sing of the gift of Shabbat and our hopes for a peaceful and meaningful life.
