Epilepsy Research UK
Epilepsy is a common neurological condition. 聽In the majority of cases, the cause is unknown.聽
Medication controls the seizures in approximately 60-70% of cases, but the drugs themselves may have unpleasant side effects.聽 For those whose epilepsy is uncontrolled, life can be extremely difficult.聽
Epilepsy Research UK is dedicated to funding research into this condition.
Rachel and her epilepsy
Rachel was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 3.聽 At the age of 7 she underwent ground-breaking surgery when an area of tissue, the size of a 20 pence piece was removed from her brain.聽
Rachel had struggled at school before the surgery.聽 She was quiet and lethargic and needed constant help and support.聽 Following the operation her medication was gradually withdrawn and she has had no seizures since.聽 She is now doing really well in her studies.
Research
Our vision is of a world where everyone can live seizure free.聽 Epilepsy Research UK funds the work of scientists and clinicians, such as our 2017 grant recipients pictured, who are investigating ways to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of epilepsy; promising a better future for those affected by the condition.
