About the charity

Shannon Trust supports prisoners to transform their lives. We train prisoners who can read to teach and mentor prisoners who can鈥檛. Our staff and volunteers work with all prisons throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Every year we help 4,000 prisoners unlock the power of reading, enabling them to stay connected to their families and open the doors to education and a better chance of rehabilitation and employment. Jimmy, who Cathy talks about in the appeal, explains the difference that learning to read has made for him:

鈥業 knew learning to read would help me.鈥

鈥業 knew learning to read would help me.鈥

The chance to learn one-to-one with Ben, another prisoner, helped Jimmy overcome the shame he felt and get the support he knew would help him. 鈥業t was tough, I was so embarrassed. It was hard learning, I wanted to give in but something kept drawing me back. Ben knew I could open that door, that I could read.鈥

鈥楻eading has opened up so many doors.鈥

鈥楻eading has opened up so many doors.鈥

Jimmy now has qualifications and he鈥檚 taken courses to help him change his behaviour. All of this would have been impossible if he couldn鈥檛 read.

鈥業f I hadn鈥檛 been able to read, I wouldn鈥檛 have done the course, there were no pictures to look at. If I hadn鈥檛 done that course, I鈥檇 have been in a rut and tangled up misbehaviour.鈥

Jimmy went on to train as a Mentor and help others unlock the power of reading.

鈥榃hen someone needs help with reading, I can see it. There was a man on one of my courses. He couldn鈥檛 read, he鈥檇 just throw his arms in the air. I said to him 鈥淒o you think I was born reading? You remind me of me.鈥 And I helped him learn to read.鈥
