Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

For forty years, I helped organise a mission of hope for the people I ministered with even though I was the one in dire need of hope.

Hope is based on the belief that it is possible to change. It is seeing the light in spite of being surrounded by darkness. Hope is not pretending that troubles don鈥檛 exist; rather it鈥檚 realising that troubles won鈥檛 last forever.

Father Anthony De Mello was an inspirational guide who used novel stories to make his point stick. At one time in his life he was so over-worked that he almost had a breakdown.

His friends tried to convince him to change his work patterns. Later he told us -: 鈥淚 resented them and I agreed with them.聽 I wanted to change but simply couldn鈥檛, no matter how hard I tried.鈥

What hurt him most was that his best friend insisted he needed to change. He became angry and even more confused.

Then one day the friend said to him-: 鈥淒on鈥檛 change if you don鈥檛 want to. I love you as you are.鈥 He relaxed immediately and suddenly he changed.

Reflecting on what happened, De Mello realised he couldn鈥檛 really change until he found someone who loved him whether he changed or not.

Hope has to be practical to be helpful. Hope inspires us to push ahead when it would be more practical to quit. You know you have hope when you can take setbacks in your stride.

Recently I used a reflection on hope in a talk. It struck the right chord for them and I think it might help us this morning.

If you can look at the sunset and smile, if you can find beauty in the colour of small flowers, if you appreciate the miracle of a butterfly, if the smile of a child can still warm your heart, if you can see the good in other people, if the patter of rain breaking on a rooftop can lull you to sleep and if the sight of a rainbow makes you stop and stare in wonder, then you still have hope.

So be grateful.
