Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

On the tube, a stranger comes up, 鈥淩ichard?鈥 he asks.听 I peer at him, thinking 鈥榳ho are you? I really wanna know?鈥 (thank you for that Roger);听 then my facial recognition circuit fires, and I see it is a school friend not seen in forty years. We went to Young Farmers鈥 discos in the seventies. He was handy with a hay bale, as I recall.

I do what you do when you encounter someone not seen in forty years: hairline, waistline, complexion, teeth. All in remarkably good order. His smile was broad, unconstrained by the need to conceal gnashers past their sell-by; his handshake firm, his palm pleasantly dry even on this hot day, and his trousers, unlike mine, showed no evidence of the technology whereby a man with a forty inch waist can maintain the illusion that he鈥檚 still in the high thirties.

Not only nature had been kind: he was smartly turned out, soign茅 but age-appropriate, and as we talked I discovered he was nicely set up in the Home Counties, prosperous and content, running a media company with a fashionably misspelt name. We parted - but I kept thinking about the encounter, and eventually I had to admit I was comparing myself with my old pal. No leafy Home Counties billet for me, no high corner office with a view of St Paul鈥檚, no brilliant children playing in County Youth Orchestras or having trials with Wycombe Wanderers. I don鈥檛 actually know if he even has kids but that was the scenario running through my mind.

And then I thought, get a grip. It鈥檚 just someone else鈥檚 life, not a judgement on your own - and if we really were to compare like with like (maybe he was doing it too?) we would find the same mixture of prestige and disappointment, the stuff we put on show and the stuff we seek to hide.

Once you鈥檝e passed the mid-point (and who am I kidding at 56?) you look behind you at genes, luck, the way the wind blows, and see the unique pattern of a life taking shape: but look forwards and the view and different, for what comes into focus is so much more about what we share than what divides us.

Be kind to each other, be generous: we鈥檙e all in it together, and heading the same way.
