Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought
From Dave Tomlinson, writer and Vicar of St Luke's Holloway in London:
When I handed out pens and gave my congregation two minutes to drawGod, the horror on certain adult's faces was matched only by thechildren's unabashed fervour.
My favourite was a little girl's drawing of a cat with a massive grin.Seven-year-old Daniel began by drawing clouds, then paused andhanded me the paper blank side up. When I made to turn it over, he said,'No Dave, that side. It's air. God is air.'
That's pretty sophisticated thinking for a seven-year-old. And it comesvery close to my idea of God. I can't be doing with the bearded man inthe sky. To me, God is much more like the atmosphere that surroundsand fills us supporting all life on earth. It doesn't belong to any species, race or religion, and there's no matter what we call it, or even whetherwe believe it exists - we are sustained just the same.
That's how I see God - the Life Force in all that exists. Religion is how wecomprehend and interpret this. Science is another way, but the two arenot in conflict.
In the church calendar, tomorrow is the feast of Corpus Christi - whenthe church gives thanks for the sacrament of Mass or Holy Communion.A sacrament is a material thing - like bread, wine or water - whichChristian's believe conveys God's presence.
To me, the whole idea that God is present in a pinch of bread and a sip ofwine at communion only makes sense if the whole earth, the entireuniverse is a sacrament - if God lives in every loaf of bread, every glassof wine (or cup of tea), if every raindrop, every blade of grass, everysmile or tear is sacred gift. It's not religious ritual which ultimatelyhelps me to sense God, but the attentiveness and gratitude I try to bringto every part of life.
So you know what: I have no difficulty recognising God in a grinning cat,or the wagging tail of a dog, or a reassuring kiss from the missus, or inthe urban woodpecker gracing our birdfeeder.
People will argue interminably about religion; I reckon the importantthing is to treasure the sacredness of ordinary life, of days and momentsand the people who help fill them.
