Charlotte Smith visits the DiverseForages project at the University of Reading to find out how 'smart grass' might change the way cattle are fed. Dr Anna Thomson and Professor Chris Reynolds explain how they're combining varieties of grass with chicory and clovers to work out what might make the best quality forage and reduce the need for nitrogen fertiliser. They show Charlotte around their 'grazing platforms' and help her discover that there's a lot more to grass than simply the ground covering beneath her feet.
