Farmers are warning the government that Brexit could leave the country with a dire shortage of agricultural workers. Many farms rely on seasonal employees from EU countries to harvest their crops but the workers are telling farmers that they won't be able to travel freely to work in Britain, once the UK has left the EU. Today, the annual conference of the Food and Drink Federation, which represents the British food industry, will discuss the impact of Brexit on UK food production.
Caring for a sick relative can be extraordinarily demanding and involve big sacrifices. But the cost to carers doesn't always end, when their time as a carer comes to an end. You & Yours listener Tina Upson has been telling us about the years she spent looking after her elderly mother, who towards the end of her life, had dementia. Tina's life was completely taken up with the daily task of caring, and since her mother died, she has found it really difficult to find a new direction in life. She describes how her role as a carer led her to withdrawing from the world and now she feels that as well as losing her mother, she has also lost her job, her sense of purpose and much of her confidence. We ask how former carers can be helped to re-start their lives and find a new direction.
For years now, "virtual reality" or VR has been declared as the future of gaming. But the cost of the equipment, including headsets and a high-end computer, has meant that for most, the experience at home has been rather limited. Now though, VR is starting to appear in shopping centres. Using headsets, but also surround sound and hydraulic seats to enhance the illusion, it promises a thrilling interactive experience.
