It was no less than Martin Luther, architect of the Protestant Reformation, who dubbed his older contemporary Josquin Desprez "master of the notes, which must do as he wishes, while other composers must follow what the notes dictate". Nowhere is this mastery more apparent than in Josquin's Missa L'homme arm茅 sexti toni, whose calm surface belies the fearsome complexity of its inner contrapuntal workings.
