Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson,Ìýwriter and Vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London:

Ìý

Life is full of surprises…. becoming a vicar was one of the biggest for my friends and family ….and me! Some surprises are wonderful – like discovering you’re having twins! Others not so much: suddenly losing a loved one or receiving a devastating diagnosis may feel unbearable.

Ìý

Four years ago, our friend of ours named Sophie was told she only had a few months to live. It’s a long story but Sophie is still here, still living with cancer but on an incredible journey supporting an international network of people living with the disease.

Ìý

She recently wrote about what she calls lifeshocks – unwanted, unexpected moments that blindside us and refuse to be ignored. These may not be massive life-changers like hers: just ordinary everyday disappointments – but collision points between life as we perceive it and life as it actually is.

Ìý

The crunch thing, however, isn’t what happens to us but how we navigate our way through it. Lifeshocks, Sophie maintains, can be catalysts to make our life better because they bring things into clearer perspective, enable us to appreciate everything more. Now as many know, I am a bad Christian, I don’t always find good advice appealing. I want a way out of frustrating or painful circumstances; I don’t want to hear that they’re ‘character-building’ or ‘good for the soul’. But then Sophie’s life reminds me that we can either spend hours or weeks kicking against stuff we can’t change, or we get on with life one bit at a time.

Ìý

In possibly the most life-affirming conversation I’ve had, a man who’d suffered for decades said, ‘All things must pass, Dave – embrace what’s good, and don’t get too upset by what is challenging. Most pain comes from wishing things were different.’ I think surprises – pleasant or challenging – keep me awake on the inside, they stop me sleep-walking through life when its boring, or painful, or demanding, when I want to switch off. They seem to say ‘Wake up Dave. This is your life…every bit of it. Don’t miss a moment!
