Prayer for the Day
In 1961, a thirty-one year old American James Irwin graduated from the US Air Force experimental test pilot school. That same year, whilst training a student pilot, the student crashed the plane he was in. As a result, Irwin was severely injured, and might have had his leg amputated, but for the intervention of an orthopaedic surgeon.
Despite his injuries, Irwin recovered so thoroughly that he was one of two men who set out on this day, 1st August, 1971 for a drive in a new vehicle – a lunar rover.Together with David Scott, Irwin had arrived on the moon, his childhood dream, in the Apollo 15 spacecraft. On that day, as they explored the rocks on the moon, they found a moon rock… It was called the Genesis Rock, because it was at first believed to be a piece of the moon’s original crust. It’s a kind of rock called anorthosite, formed in the early stages of the Solar System.
After his time in space, Irwin retired and set up the High Flight Foundation, to help communicate the new perspectives he gained from his unearthly experiences to assist those of us still on the ground.
Perhaps from the vantage point of having walked on the moon, he saw the smallness of our world from the vastness of space. James Irwin believed that Jesus walking on earth was more important than man walking on the moon. And he put that into practice by walking on earth in the Spirit of Christ.Â
As a child, Irwin had told his mother he would go to the moon. Few of us have that kind of certainty about our direction in life.Â
Lord, when we are uncertain about the way ahead,Remind us that you walk with usSo that we may put our trust in you. AmenÂ
