Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
Ìý
Muslims all over the world are celebrating Eid Al Adha today.
Ìý
The Eid festivities – marked by special prayers, with new clothes, and all manner of delicious foods making an appearance - joyfully signal the end of Hajj – The Great Pilgrimage, and Islam’s fifth pillar.
Ìý
Over the past few days, approximately three million people, have gathered to participate in religious rites that go back, not to the prophet Muhammad, but to the Prophets Abraham, and to Adam.
Ìý
Indeed, yesterday, The Day of Arafat, all the pilgrims gathered on a hill just outside of Makkah, to pray for forgiveness. A re-enactment of the story of Adam, who is said to have been reunited with his wife, Eve, there, and together they prayed for forgiveness from God after their fall from grace.
Ìý
Whether you take the story to be allegory or understand it literally, the essential meaning of the story remains the same.
Ìý
Adam’s and Eve’s decision to ignore God’s wishes, demonstrates human free will, and that ultimately humans are fallible. We will fail, we will fall. However the story is not a negative one. It is not about falling, it is about getting back up. It is not about being lost, it is about finding our way home.
Ìý
For, in the Muslim telling of the Adam and Eve story they both recognised their own wrong-doing, they didn’t try to blame others for their mistakes, or explain away their failings. Instead, they immediately accepted responsibility for their own errors, and sought the forgiveness of The Most Merciful. They were forgiven, and they moved on.
Ìý
The story shows us that to make mistakes and to be forgetful is in the nature of the first human. It is not only part of the human story, it is part of the human condition. And, in the story, the best way to respond is to accept our weaknesses and failings, and to say to sorry.
Ìý
For Muslims the world over, Eid today is a day to rejoice because even though we may make mistakes, even though we may isolate ourselves from The Divine, saying sorry provides a way home, and an opportunity for new beginnings.
